Cycle between different probiotic strains

Description

Transform gut health by rotating probiotic strains-the strategy most doctors don't share. Targets different gut regions & boosts microbiome diversity for better results.

Why we recommend this

  • Research in Cell Host & Microbe shows that different probiotic strains colonise distinct niches in the gut and support different immune and metabolic functions
  • Dr. Jason Hawrelak's clinical research demonstrates that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains primarily modulate the small intestine, while soil-based organisms like Bacillus species support colon health
  • Studies in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology show that Saccharomyces boulardii, a beneficial yeast, helps maintain gut barrier integrity during antibiotic treatment and supports immune responses distinct from bacterial probiotics
  • Dr. Ilana Gurevich's clinical work shows that patients who rotate probiotic strains experience better long-term outcomes than those using the same formula continuously
  • Research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrates that probiotic effectiveness depends partly on your existing microbiome, making strain diversity and rotation important for comprehensive support

Usage

Rotate between 3 types: (1) Lactobacillus/Bifidobacterium blends (10-30 billion CFU), (2) Saccharomyces boulardii (5 billion CFU), and (3) soil-based organisms like Bacillus species (3-5 billion CFU)

Timing

Use each type for 4-8 weeks before rotating; take on empty stomach 20 minutes before breakfast or 2+ hours after dinner unless product specifies otherwise

Important notes

  • Introduce new probiotic strains gradually - start with 1/4 to 1/2 dose for 3-4 days to assess tolerance before increasing
  • Dr. Lucy Mailing cautions that those with SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) or severe gut inflammation may need to address these conditions before starting probiotics
  • Keep detailed notes when rotating strains to identify which ones provide the most benefit for your specific symptoms
  • Quality matters significantly - choose products with demonstrated stability, guaranteed potency through expiration date, and strain-specific research
  • Refrigerate probiotic products unless specifically formulated for room temperature storage
  • Consider temporary discontinuation during acute gastrointestinal illness unless specifically using S. boulardii for diarrhea support
